On-Site Hydrogen for Power Plant Generator Cooling

Hydrogen generation and integrated supply packages for hydrogen-cooled generators, configured around gas quality, make-up demand, refilling requirements, and plant operations.

The Application

Hydrogen Supply for Turbo-Generators

Large generators in thermal power plants can use hydrogen as a cooling medium. Its heat-transfer properties and low density support effective cooling with lower windage losses than air, while gas purity and moisture levels influence operating performance.

Hydrogen circulates within the generator’s cooling system. The supply package provides gas for initial filling, refilling after maintenance, and make-up during operation, with capacity and reserve arrangements defined around each plant’s requirements.

NorthBridge GasTech LLP supplies on-site hydrogen generation equipment and supporting infrastructure for integration with existing generator gas supply systems.

Process Requirements

Designed Around Your Generating Units

We work from generator specifications, actual gas consumption, outage plans, and the existing supply infrastructure to define the hydrogen package.

Purity & Dew Point

Confirm the generator manufacturer’s hydrogen purity, moisture, and contaminant limits. Gas treatment and monitoring are specified for the supply interface, with generator-side purity and dew point monitoring coordinated with the existing plant systems.

Make-Up & Refilling Demand

Size generation around normal hydrogen make-up, the number of units served, and refilling needs after outages. Buffer storage and backup supply are assessed separately for short-duration demand that exceeds normal consumption.

Pressure & Existing Manifolds

Define delivery pressure against generator supply regulators, piping losses, and storage requirements. Check whether the electrolyser’s outlet pressure is sufficient or whether additional compression is needed for the selected storage arrangement.

Utilities & Control Interfaces

Assess power availability, treated feedwater, cooling, installation space, and operating conditions. Define PLC, SCADA, or plant DCS interfaces for status, alarms, and the agreed operating and shutdown functions.

Our Scope

From Generation to the Generator Supply Manifold

Engage us for a complete turnkey hydrogen supply system, an individual generation package, or an upgrade to existing plant infrastructure.

PEM electrolysis is a strong option for generator cooling applications, offering compact equipment packages and automated production from water and electricity. The selected package is assessed against demand, outlet gas quality, utilities, and lifecycle cost.

Generation can follow demand or replenish buffer storage, depending on the equipment and supply strategy. Testing and commissioning verify the agreed gas specification and supply interfaces.

Supply Strategy

Plan for Make-Up, Outages & Backup Supply

On-site generation can reduce reliance on routine cylinder deliveries and manual changeovers while providing a defined supply arrangement for the generating units.

Reserve capacity is assessed against electrolyser maintenance, loss of power or utilities, and generator refilling schedules. Existing cylinder banks or other backup sources can be retained where required, with connections and changeover responsibilities defined in the project scope.

The integration plan follows the generator manufacturer’s gas-handling requirements, including interfaces with existing purge and filling arrangements. Commercial studies compare equipment investment, electricity, water treatment, maintenance, and reserve supply costs.
