On-Site Hydrogen for Float Glass Manufacturing

Hydrogen generation and integrated supply systems for the tin bath’s protective atmosphere, configured around gas quality, mixture composition, and continuous plant operation.

The Application

Hydrogen for the Tin Bath Atmosphere

In float glass manufacturing, molten glass spreads across a bath of molten tin to form a flat ribbon. A nitrogen-hydrogen atmosphere protects the tin from oxidation and helps maintain the surface conditions needed for glass quality.

Nitrogen provides the main protective atmosphere, while hydrogen acts as a reducing gas, reacting with oxygen to form water vapour. Oxygen and moisture control help limit tin oxide formation and associated glass surface defects. Mixture composition and bath pressure are defined by the line supplier’s operating specification.

NorthBridge GasTech LLP supplies on-site hydrogen generation packages and supporting infrastructure for integration with the plant’s atmosphere system.

Process Requirements

Designed Around Your Float Line

We define the hydrogen supply requirement using the tin bath specifications, consumption profile, existing nitrogen supply, and plant operating strategy.

Purity & Moisture Control

Define hydrogen purity, oxygen limits, and dew point against the tin bath supplier’s specification. Purification, drying, and gas-quality monitoring are selected to preserve the required atmosphere at the point of use.

Continuous Supply & Backup

Size generation around normal consumption, peak demand, and operating conditions across the line. Buffer capacity, backup connections, and maintenance arrangements are planned around the required supply continuity.

Hydrogen-Nitrogen Composition

Confirm the required gas mixture and any differences between bath zones. Metering, mixing, and controls are integrated with the nitrogen supply and existing atmosphere system to maintain the specified composition.

Pressure & Distribution

Define hydrogen delivery pressure, piping losses, and connections to the mixing or distribution system. Coordinate supply regulation with the bath’s atmosphere controls and positive-pressure requirements.

Our Scope

From Hydrogen Generation to Atmosphere Supply

Engage us for a complete turnkey hydrogen system, individual equipment packages, or integration with an existing float glass plant.

Alkaline and PEM electrolysers are assessed against hydrogen demand, gas quality, available utilities, and lifecycle cost. Automated generation can follow demand or replenish buffer storage, depending on the selected package. Purification, drying, piping, and controls are configured to deliver the agreed gas specification at the plant interface.

Supply Strategy

Plan for Continuous Operation & Plant Upgrades

On-site generation can reduce dependence on routine hydrogen deliveries and provide a defined supply arrangement for a continuously operating float line.

We assess buffer storage, backup interfaces, equipment maintenance, and the response to power interruptions. For existing plants, the integration scope includes current piping, nitrogen supply, mixing equipment, and controls, with installation and changeover planned around plant operations.

Where renewable electricity is available, a Green Hydrogen arrangement can be evaluated alongside supply continuity. The commercial assessment compares equipment investment, electricity, water treatment, maintenance, and backup costs with the existing gas supply.
